Common sorrel ( Dipsacus silvester ) is a biennial plant of the sorrel family. It is common in Poland and other areas of Europe , as well as in Western Asia and North Africa. It grows wild , and is less commonly cultivated , although it sometimes enriches home gardens as an ornamental , or as a raw herbal material The raw materials used in supplementation are the roots , which are dug up in early spring or autumn , and the leaves , which are harvested in spring before the plant blooms. Due to its spiky stem , bristle is often compared in appearance to spotted thistle.
