Buckthorn
Common buckthorn (Frangula alnus) - a species of shrub belonging to the acrid family [Rhamnaceae]. In Poland it can be found all over the lowlands and lower mountainous areas. Other names are also used, for example: buckthorn, troszczyna or wolfberry. In some regions, it is treated as a weed, but people with knowledge value it for its extensive medicinal properties. The most sought-after product is buckthorn bark, which is harvested in early spring from previously cut young shoots and twigs.
Buckthorn bark - laxative effect
Well-dried buckthorn bark contains anthraquinones in an amount of no less than 6% per glucofranguline A. These are predominantly franguloemodine and its derivatives. It is precisely because of the content of these compounds that the buckthorn bark has such a bitter taste and laxative properties - they stimulate the digestive juices and improve food absorption
