Antiperspirant vs Deodorant: How to Choose the Right Product

Antiperspirant vs Deodorant: How to Choose the Right Product

Sweat is a normal and necessary physiological process — the body's primary mechanism for regulating temperature. But excess sweating, or sweating that produces persistent odour, affects daily comfort and confidence in a way that most people want to manage effectively. The choice between a deodorant and an antiperspirant, and between different formulations within each category, makes more difference than most people realise. Here's what you need to know to make the right choice for your skin and lifestyle.

Antiperspirant vs Deodorant: Not the Same Thing

These two product types are often used interchangeably, but they work through fundamentally different mechanisms. A deodorant addresses odour — it either masks it with fragrance, neutralises it with antimicrobial agents, or both — but does nothing to reduce sweating itself. A antiperspirant reduces the production of sweat by temporarily blocking the sweat ducts, typically using aluminium-based compounds. By limiting the moisture available, it also reduces the bacterial activity that produces body odour.

If your primary concern is odour without heavy sweating, a deodorant is sufficient. If you experience significant wetness — visible on clothing, affecting comfort throughout the day — an antiperspirant is more appropriate. Many people use both, selecting based on the demands of the day: deodorant for lighter days, antiperspirant for exercise, heat, or high-stress situations.

How Antiperspirants Work: Aluminium and Alternatives

Conventional antiperspirants use aluminium salts (aluminium chloride, aluminium chlorohydrate, aluminium zirconium compounds) that react with moisture at the surface of the sweat duct, forming a temporary gel plug that reduces sweat output. The higher the aluminium concentration, the stronger the effect — clinical-strength formulations with 15–20% aluminium chloride are the most effective options for heavy sweating and are typically applied at night to dry skin, allowing maximum absorption before sweating begins, then rinsed off in the morning.

For best results with any antiperspirant, apply it to clean, completely dry skin — immediately after showering is not ideal, as residual moisture reduces effectiveness and increases the risk of skin irritation. Allow the skin to dry fully first.

[tip:Never apply antiperspirant to broken, irritated, or freshly depilated skin. The aluminium compounds can cause significant stinging and inflammation on compromised skin. Wait at least 24–48 hours after hair removal before reapplying.]

Aluminium-Free Options: Natural Deodorants That Work

Concerns about aluminium in antiperspirants have driven significant growth in the natural deodorant category. While the scientific evidence for harm from cosmetic aluminium use is limited and contested, many people prefer to avoid it for precautionary reasons, or because they find conventional antiperspirants irritating to sensitive skin.

Natural deodorants control odour rather than sweating, using a combination of antimicrobial ingredients (bicarbonate of soda, essential oils, mineral crystals), moisture-absorbing powders, and skin-conditioning agents. The best natural deodorants work well for most people in moderate conditions, though they require a brief adaptation period of one to two weeks as the skin adjusts after switching from conventional antiperspirants.

Ben&Anna produces a well-regarded range of natural deodorants in both stick and cream formats, using plant-based ingredients without aluminium salts, parabens, or synthetic fragrances. The stick format works like a conventional deodorant and is particularly easy to apply; the cream format (available in Pink Grapefruit, Persian Lime, and Vanilla Orchid) provides additional moisturising benefits. We Love The Planet offers refillable aluminium-free deodorant sticks — a sustainable option that performs consistently across scents including Zesty Lime, Fresh Citrus, Sweet Rose, and Soft Almond.

For a mineral-based approach, the Najel Alum Spray uses natural potassium alum (a different compound from aluminium chloride) in a 125 ml spray format. Alum works by creating an inhospitable environment for the bacteria responsible for odour without blocking pores. It's fragrance-free, suitable for sensitive skin, and has a long history of use in natural personal care.

The Bioturm Silver Deodorant Intensive uses silver ions as its active antimicrobial agent — a clinically studied approach that neutralises odour-causing bacteria effectively without aluminium or baking soda (which some people find irritating).

Choosing by Format: Roll-On, Spray, Stick, or Cream

Roll-ons apply a liquid or gel formula evenly and tend to be the gentlest on sensitive skin. They require a few minutes to dry before dressing and generally produce no residue on clothing. Roll-ons with higher aluminium content (such as clinical-strength formulations) are typically offered in this format.

Sprays are convenient, hygienically applied without direct contact with skin, and dry quickly. They don't transfer to clothing. The drawback for sensitive skin types is that sprays often contain alcohol as a propellant carrier, which can cause dryness or irritation with daily use.

Sticks contain talc or wax-based carriers that absorb moisture and leave skin feeling dry. They're clean to apply and have no drying-out period. The main limitation is that some formulations leave white marks on darker fabrics. Stick deodorants in the natural category (Ben&Anna, We Love The Planet) avoid talc entirely and use plant-based waxes instead.

Cream deodorants are the most skin-conditioning format — typically containing nourishing oils alongside the active ingredients. They're well-suited to dry or sensitive underarm skin, and the absence of alcohol and talc makes them the gentlest option overall. The Ben&Anna Soda-Based Deodorant Cream range exemplifies this format.

Foot Antiperspirant: An Often-Overlooked Option

Excessive foot sweating is a common problem with practical consequences — odour, skin maceration, and increased risk of fungal issues. The Perspirex Foot Antiperspirant is a clinically formulated roll-on specifically designed for feet, applying the same aluminium chloride technology used for underarm antiperspirants to a more challenging area. Applied to clean, dry feet before bed, it significantly reduces perspiration with regular use.

When to See a Doctor

Over-the-counter antiperspirants manage moderate to heavy sweating effectively for most people. If sweating persists despite consistent use of clinical-strength formulations, or if it interferes significantly with daily life or professional situations, it's worth consulting a dermatologist. Hyperhidrosis (medically diagnosed excessive sweating) has several effective treatment options including prescription-strength antiperspirants, iontophoresis, and in persistent cases, botulinum toxin injections or other medical interventions.
